New Orleans boasts one of the world's richest and historic cultures with its unique blend of European traditions and Caribbean influences. The French colonial influence is still noticeable, having been the last of the states to come under American rule, when Napoleon sold it to the United States in 1803. In addition the Haitian and African Creoles contributed to the linguistic and culinary development of the area with Cajun food now loved the world over. Perhaps the most recognisable gift New Orleans has given to the world, however, is jazz, and among its sons the city can count a string of successful artits from Louis Armstrong to Lenny Kravitz.
